WHERE ARE OUR GENIUSES?

by Mather Schneider

No genius in the air
just hashish skyscrapers
that vanish
like buckshot clouds
as copycat nature
repeats herself everywhere
lizards and bobcats and cactus and man
and the way the sand moves in the wind and the birds
spelling eternity in the sky
and the great fields
of love
and self doubt
abandoned fallow
and sprayed with the DDT
of overconfidence.
No genius in the air
today
to breathe like mint.
